What we've been up to ....
(week beginning 12.10.20)
This week in phonics the giraffes have continued learning phase 3 sounds. We have looked at ee, igh and or and we have practised reading and spelling words containing these sounds.
In literacy, the children have continued work around the story 'Funny Bones'. They have learnt about characters, settings and how to retell a story. We have begun to plan our own stories in a similar style including lots of great adjectives for description.
Our writing focus has been understanding the concept of a sentence. The children have learnt that a sentence is a group of words that makes sense and has meaning. We have talked about a sentence being a complete thought and we came up with our own examples. The children have then been saying their sentences out loud and writing them.
Here are some of our story plans:
In maths we have introduced the number line. The children have been finding missing numbers on a number line, comparing numbers and finding one more and one less. The emphasis has very much been on using language such as more, less, greater and smaller.
In art the children have created self portraits in their special art sketch books.
Following this, the children have been learning about the artist Picasso and his work. They have learnt about Picasso's Blue Period and how he showed emotions with colour.
Here we are working on our Picasso collages.
Please continue to record any reading in the reading records including any on bug club. We currently check the reading records on a Friday to see who has read 3 times at home and reward these children with a sticker. Next Wednesday (21.10.20) we will have a special alien themed reading afternoon to encourage children to read lots at home. Ask them to tell you all about it next week!
Giraffe's PE days will be Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will be outside when possible so please ensure your child has a pair of trainers/plimsolls for outside and warm joggers/sweatshirt for colder weather. They will also need a 2nd pair of plimsolls for indoor PE.
Thank you for your support with this.
