Handwriting

An important part of handwriting is developing muscle strength for writing. Have a go at the handwriting warm up clips before you start writing.

If the child struggles with pencil grip and control carry out fiddly tasks to help develop muscle strength in preparation for writing e.g. pegs, buttons, tweezers, threading.

Make sure they practise drawing the letter large in the air, on the ground, on someone’s back with their finger before moving onto attempting to write the letter.

Practise holding a pencil correctly and encourage them to colour in pictures.

Practise pencil control tracing different patterns.

Remember it is always useful for the child to practise writing their name until they can do this independently and confidently.
